Eadweard Muybridge (1830-1904) was an English photographer known for his early work in motion studies. One of his most influential experiments was Horse in Motion (1878), which captured in sequence the position of a horse trotting, proving that a galloping horse lifts all four of its hooves off the ground in a single moment. The photographic results represented a moment not visible to the naked eye, highlighting a new purpose for the photographic medium.
